In this outdoor session with a live model, emphasis will be placed on capturing accurate color and value relationships in order to convey vibrant light on the human figure. Because the focus will be on color and large shapes (and not specific facial features), do not expect a traditional portrait painting session. This type of painting has been referred to as “mud head painting”; we will discuss the historical context for this approach (credited and passed down from the 19th century American artist Charles Webster Hawthorne.) Materials: Oil or acrylic paint, portable easel and palette; students should be prepared to paint outside in sunshine (with painting gear, hat, sunscreen, water bottle, etc.)
