DESCRIPTION:Written and performed by Cara Gabriel. Directed by Chelsea Thaler. \nWashington\, D.C. is the second fastest gentrifying city in the United States. Cara Gabriel tells the story of her H Street neighborhood transforming right before her eyes. Styrofoam carry-out containers are replaced with eco-friendly coffee cups as Gabriel chats with us from her front porch in her one woman show\, I AM THE GENTRY. \nThe Washington Post praised the “humor and humility” of I AM THE GENTRY\, and called the text “tough and immediate.” The Washington City Paper called the work “poignant\, episodic\, and often very funny\,” while “succeed[ing] admirably at talking comfortably about uncomfortable topics — race\, class\, money\, education\, (and the ways they all play into the story of Washington\, D.C. gentrification).” And DC Metro Theater Arts characterized the material as “impressive and raw\,” “heartbreaking and laugh-out-loud funny.” \nCara Gabriel is currently a theatre professor at American University and has been performing an abridged\, solo version of I AM THE GENTRY to sold-out crowds since 2013\, where it appeared at The Atlas “Intersections” Festival in DC.  Since then GENTRY has also appeared at DC’s Capital Fringe Festival\, San Francisco’s “Exit” Theatre\, and the “United Solo” Festival in NYC. \nTickets: $20 each.
