Artist Biography:

Prior to his retirement, Maurice was the dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Arizona — a position he held for 18 years. He earned studio art and advanced arts degrees from the Massachusetts College of Art, Harvard University and The Ohio State University. He has studied digital photography and painting in Europe and has exhibited widely. Maurice has taught art and administered visual arts programs at Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green University, The University of Texas at Austin and The Roehampton Institute, London.

Artist Statement:

Maurice is a “one-of-a-kind” jewelry designer and a digital mixed media painter. His variety of necklace designs merge materials from assorted cultural contexts and incorporate exotic semi-precious metals, stones and accent beads. His necklaces are known for their uniqueness, color and texture. His paintings have been inspired by extensive exotic travel and experimentation with digital photography that are distorted with paint software designed as underpaintings. These composite images are printed with archival inks on archival papers and serve for adding multiple layers of traditional media, color enhancement and textural contrast and enhanced in the traditional studio with multiple mixed media applications. The end results are one-of- a kind mixed media paintings.
