Artist Biography:
Karen Lembo works primarily in acrylic and mixed media, although, as a veteran art educator, she also enjoys mixing things up, working in a variety of media and also writing about her work. Karen holds a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art from SUNY Oswego and a Master’s in Art Education from Syracuse University. In addition to spending extended time raising her family, Karen has taught every age, from preschool through University, and now enjoys dedicating time to her own art practice.
A native of Upstate New York, Karen has lived on Maryland’s Eastern Shore for the past 17 years. “When I’m not creating, you’ll probably find me Face Timing my three-year-old granddaughter Joy in Korea, ministering to women in my community, or spending some time outdoors walking, biking, or hanging out on the beach. But my absolute favorite pastime is hanging out with my husband Art (ironic, I know) and my kids, Emily, Arthur and Katie–my three most treasured creations.”
Karen currently shows her work locally here at the Ocean City Art League, the Worcester County Art League, and at the Salisbury Art Space and has been honored to receive recognition in all three locations. You can see more examples of her work, including her popular pet portraits, and read the stories behind her work on her blog on karenlembo.com. She’d love to connect with you on Instagram @klemboart
Artist Statement:
As an artist, I choose to emphasize the blessings and beauty from my personal journey towards healing, growth and transformation. In contrast to the technologically-driven trends of our current generation that lead to distraction, oversimplification, and the passing of quick judgment, I’ve been working to develop a subtle style that invites the viewer to linger and reconsider first impressions. I want to encourage others to take a closer look by hinting at deeper meanings just below the surface. My current work blends realism with ambiguity, creating layers of texts and textures through both Mixed Media and Acrylic painting that evoke memories, dreams, and my own spiritual journey.
