Purrfect: Cat in Ink and Watercolor, by Joan Lok
I grew up with two cats that we got when they were kittens. Watching and playing with them are intertwined into the fabrics of my childhood memory. Cats’ cute appearance and mischievous behaviors are irresistible. I wish to capture different postures and moods of cats in simplistic brushwork, and share the joy of their curiosity with my audience.
Joan Lok creates artworks that link Asian tradition to an adventurous, modern viewpoint. Born in Hong Kong, Joan came to America in 1983 after winning an international cultural exchange fellowship. Joan won many awards including the Best of Show from the Sumi-e Society of America and Sumi-e Artists of Canada Joint Exhibition, the Kyoto Education Council Award in Japan, and the National Cherry Blossom Festival Contest in America. Joan is listed in Who's Who of American Art. Her art instruction book "Chinese Brush Painting: Flowers" is available in English, Dutch, French, Italian and Spanish. Joan lives in Columbia, Maryland and teaches sumi-e workshops locally and across the country.
In Studio E:
Mary Jane Hastings.
Since she was a child, Mary Jane was interested in painting, but it was not until she married and moved to Selbyville DE that she began to paint seriously. Mary Jane enrolled in summer art classes taught by the late Harry M. Progar, a well-known artist in Laurel DE. Progar taught her the use of a painting or palette knife to create her pieces. As the years have progressed, she added soft brush strokes and directional light.
Mary Jane is always learning new methods for improving her painting. She has done some teaching and has had extensive exhibits, sales, gallery displays, awards and commissions. Painting is part of her daily routine. She does not like to be called an artist. She indicated that art does not need her, but that she needs her art. She spends time each day in her bright studio and her joy of painting is evident in her work.
