The Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery are linked together, making for easy exploration of American artists’ vision of life here and overseas, and their discoveries about and expression of their subject’s personality, life, and work through portrait.

In the American art Museum, an ongoing exhibit Experiencing America with art that depicts the genre of life in America from the 30’s until the end of the war dealing with citizens’ responses and coping with life at that time. Displays in the Galleries for Modern and Contemporary Art will take you from the 40’s through today with artwork expressing the challenges due to changes in the world will inspire your sense of artistic risk-taking and self-expression with artists’ inclusion of various ‘new’ materials. Amazing images from the Brilliant Exiles: American Women in Paris, 1900–1939 exhibit, Star Power: Photographs from Hollywood’s Golden Age, and Oprah Winfrey’s commissioned portrait will highlight your tour in the Portrait Gallery. We’ll begin with viewing pieces together, then you are free to travel through the Museum and Gallery with their free audio guides, and enjoy lunch in the Courtyard Café.
