“I Am the Gentry”
Written and performed by Cara Gabriel. Directed by Chelsea Thaler.
Washington, D.C. is the second fastest gentrifying city in the United States. Cara Gabriel tells the story of her H Street neighborhood transforming right before her eyes. Styrofoam carry-out containers are replaced with eco-friendly coffee cups as Gabriel chats with us from her front porch in her one woman show, I AM THE GENTRY.
The Washington Post praised the “humor and humility” of I AM THE GENTRY, and called the text “tough and immediate.” The Washington City Paper called the work “poignant, episodic, and often very funny,” while “succeed[ing] admirably at talking comfortably about uncomfortable topics — race, class, money, education, (and the ways they all play into the story of Washington, D.C. gentrification).” And DC Metro Theater Arts characterized the material as “impressive and raw,” “heartbreaking and laugh-out-loud funny.”
Cara Gabriel is currently a theatre professor at American University and has been performing an abridged, solo version of I AM THE GENTRY to sold-out crowds since 2013, where it appeared at The Atlas “Intersections” Festival in DC. Since then GENTRY has also appeared at DC’s Capital Fringe Festival, San Francisco’s “Exit” Theatre, and the “United Solo” Festival in NYC.

Brown Box Theatre Presents: The Hotel Nepenthe
Through the twisting, winding corridors of the mind lies a world both chillingly relatable and thoroughly alien. As the settings and characters shift and morph through a series of delightfully turbulent vignettes, we are drawn down a rabbit hole of the familiar and the bizarre, held captive by endless parallel universes that seep from the stage to consume our very being. Not for the faint of heart, The Hotel Nepenthe is a perilously absurd romp through the mysteries of human nature, the ripples of fairy wings and alternate realities, and the search for meaning from within the abyss.

Showing this week: “Strange Fruit: Taking a Stand Through Song” by Sam Seliger. Winner of best Youth short. The song was a catalyst for the Civil Rights movement, and ignited a culture of protest in the music industry, inspiring artists such as Nina Simone. May 2022 Prompt:
This month I am sharing a prompt sent to me by Don Winslow on 7-28-2014.
Don was the first writer to join our group during the winter of 2009-10.
Picture yourself being given a year, a whole year, added to your life, with no cares, no concerns- just a year to do what you want, all expenses covered. And it wouldn’t affect your life at all. Like a vacation, like time out, life would pick up just as it had been before the “free year”. No one would notice that you were gone.
What would you do, and when would you do it (i.e., what period of your life would you choose to expand?)
It’s your choice!
“Change your life”, Rilke wrote.
It’s like writing a new chapter, isn’t it?
Enjoy your creative journey!
See you May 21st,
Ruth Alcorn

June 2022 Prompt:
Fear not for the future, weep not for the past.
~Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822)
How often have the two aspects of Shelly’s quote managed to enter your mind and interrupt your life? Well, we’re now in goddess Juno’s month, where marriage and childbirth reside.
The Latin word for June is juvenis, “young people”.
And so, our prompt is for each writer to release all future fears and erase any past sadness, in order to create, with the innocence of youth on your side, a poem/prose piece to share at June’s meeting.
Look back over your life and find a time, a situation, you’d like to address by re-writing the occasion. Or, if you manage to recall an incident you handled appropriately, with perfection, please share it with us at June’s gathering.
The timeframe may extend from an early memory, through to the present. As I spoke to a member of our group recently, I said: “It’s like a revision of a trip down memory lane”.
Oh, she replied, (stuck on the word “trip”), you mean I need to remember something from the ‘60’s?
Well, perhaps…
*As always, if you’re working on something else, please feel free to bring it along to share.
It’s your choice!
Enjoy your creative journey!

$5 Film Night
Join us at the Arts Center for short films from past years of the Ocean City Film Challenge. Content not rated by the MPAA. $5 donation for admission.
Plus criteria for the 5th annual Challenge, the annual contest for filmmakers to make a short film in or about Ocean City. Registration is free and open to the public. Registration, complete rules and regulations available here: https://forms.gle/9r2n2gYCTPhu89AN9
THE 2020 OCEAN CITY FILM CHALLENGE. 45 MINUTES APPROX.
- “Escape 2020” by Derek Silver. Stricken by anxiety, depression, and paranoia a couple attempts to escape 2020, if only momentarily by taking a day trip to the beach.
- “I Surf the Body Electric.” By Gregg Rosner. If poet Walt Whitman were alive today, loved the ocean as a body surfer, listened to punk rock music, and kept a video notebook of his untethered life.
- “Regeneration” by Chelsea Thaler. An experimental tribute to Ingmar Bergman.
- “The Misadventures of Local Man” by DAM Productions. A local worker, laid off due to the growing Corona Virus crisis, finds himself thrust into the role of vigilante. Local Man dons his suit by night and vows to protect his hometown from misdemeanor offenses.
- “Sea Sick” by Brandon Danganan. Each summer I spent my days working in Ocean City helping the community thrive for the tourist season. While Ocean City is a great place to bring the family and have some fun, unfortunately, people come down to beach and leave more than just their footprint in the sand. And sometimes, it’s not just the visitors but also the people that call Ocean City home that flurry it with trash. Seeing the beauty of Ocean City covered with bits of trash is part of what inspired me to create this short film to raise environmental awareness around trash pollution.
- “Melvin’s Curse” by Davis Mears. Two guys get cursed by Melvin, a merman (mermaid but a guy) who is tired of the lack of respect he gets on a daily basis.
- “They Breed Us to Feed” by B.L. Strang-Moya. At the drive-in, a young man ponders his existential fears surrounding life in a resort town.
THE 2021 OCEAN CITY FILM CHALLENGE. 30 MINUTES APPROX.
- “Oh Sin City” by Shannon Wilson. An Ocean City code enforcement officer shares the dark underbelly of his trade secrets.
- “Besties” by Joe Weiner. Aspiring filmmakers struggle to agree on an appropriate title for their Ocean City-themed film.
- “Prizehunter” by Davis Mears. A local P.I. pursues a boardwalk psychopath.
- “Apothecaries of Time” by B.L. Strang-Moya. Director B.L. recounts strange encounters with tourists.

Writers Group – All Welcome!
Creative writing discussion in a supportive group. All welcome!
November Prompt:
- Please review the past several months of your creative writing efforts, and evaluate your personal feelings of your writing activity, style and experiences.
- List the benefits and difficulties you’ve faced in composing, sharing, learning from, expanding your skills, holding onto progress and passing through “stuck” periods.
- Also consider how you begin your writing process. Do you have a “method” you follow?
- Can you deconstruct how you face writing as a process: with ease, with stress, or with something entirely different?
- Are you comfortable with allowing your mind to float through your thoughts as they arrive, or do you strive to focus on a fixed intent and stick to a need to create a specific memory, scene, idea, etc.?
- Do you find it helps to observe other members’ tactics and composition skills? Finally, do you judge your work as you write, or allow it to flow freely and then analyze it as your unique effort? Please feel free to share your personal style.
- We will discuss these topics at our November gathering, and by sharing our thoughts and technics, we may, indeed, clarify what further enhances our creative poetic/prose gifts.
